Customs clearance in Kenya

Clearance speed depends on documents. Use the checklist below before your cargo ships and tick off what you already have.

Our appointed agent files entries on KRA iCMS and applies for permits through the KenTrade single window. We send you the duty and taxes before payment, attend verification with the agent, and push back on valuation or classification queries with the evidence the case needs.

  • Tariff classification under the EAC Common External Tariff
  • Import Declaration Form on KenTrade
  • KEBS PVoC certificates and destination inspection
  • PPB, KEPHIS, Port Health and CA permits
  • Motor vehicle clearance and registration support
  • Exemptions, remissions and refund applications

Clearance questions

Answers to what importers ask us most.

How long does clearance take?

It depends on whether documents are complete, whether KRA selects the cargo for physical verification, and whether a regulated-goods permit is needed. When your documents are complete, we give you an estimate specific to your shipment before the cargo arrives.

What taxes will I pay on an import?

Most imports attract import duty under the EAC Common External Tariff, VAT, the Import Declaration Fee and the Railway Development Levy. Some goods also attract excise duty. We compute the full amount from your invoice and HS code and send it to you for approval before payment.

My cargo is going to Uganda. Do I clear it in Kenya?

Transit cargo is lodged under the Single Customs Territory at Mombasa, with duty assessed for the destination country. The cargo moves under electronic seal to the destination. You need the consignee's tax number in the destination country and any destination conformity certificate.

What happens if KRA disputes the invoice value?

We and the agent respond to the valuation query with supporting evidence such as proof of payment, supplier correspondence and price lists. Where an uplift is confirmed, we tell you the revised duty before paying.

Can I import a used car through you?

Yes. Kenya only allows used vehicles within 8 years from the year of first registration, and each vehicle needs a pre-export inspection certificate. Send the chassis number and year of manufacture and we confirm eligibility before you buy.
